ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Horn post) Ethiopia and Burundi have signed a series of bilateral agreements aimed at strengthening long-term cooperation and advancing sustainable development across multiple sectors, officials said.
The agreements were signed in the presence of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye during high-level talks in Addis Ababa.
Officials said the memoranda of understanding covers key sectors including defense, health, education, water and energy, agriculture, trade, digital identity and tourism. The agreements are described as a framework for deepening strategic cooperation and unlocking shared economic potential between the two countries.
In a statement, Abiy said the discussions with Ndayishimiye were “fruitful,” noting that both sides reaffirmed their commitment to transforming long-standing diplomatic relations into practical cooperation that supports prosperity and regional integration. He also congratulated the Burundian leader on his role as Chairperson of the African Union, adding that broader continental issues were discussed during the meeting.
Analysts say the agreements reflect a growing trend of intra-African cooperation focused on infrastructure development, economic integration and institutional modernization, as countries seek to accelerate growth under the African Union’s development frameworks.
The two leaders emphasized that the agreements would help align national development priorities and strengthen joint efforts toward sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
