Washington, D.C. (Horn post)— U.S. President Donald J. Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran, contingent on Tehran’s full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, after mediation by Pakistan.
In a statement posted on his social media account, Trump said the pause would be a “double-sided CEASEFIRE” and noted that U.S. military objectives in the region had been met. He highlighted ongoing negotiations with Iran, including a 10-point proposal he described as a “workable basis” for long-term peace in the Middle East.
“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan, who requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump wrote.
He added that almost all points of past contention had been resolved and that the two-week window would allow the agreement to be finalized. Trump described the development as a significant step toward long-term stability in the Middle East.
