One attacker killed, two detained after gunfire near Israeli diplomatic site in Istanbul’s Levent district.
HARGEISA (Horn Post) — One attacker was killed and two others injured following a shooting near the Israeli consulate area in Istanbul, authorities said, in an incident that prompted a heavy police response in the city’s Levent district.
According to Turkish officials, the attack took place outside a commercial complex near the Israeli Consulate General in Istanbul. Three-armed individuals reportedly opened fire and engaged in a confrontation with police stationed at the site.
Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftci said security forces neutralized the attackers after an exchange of gunfire. One suspect was killed, while the other two were captured with injuries. Two police officers sustained minor wounds during the incident.
Authorities said preliminary investigations identified the suspects, noting that one had traveled to Istanbul from Izmit using a rental vehicle and was linked to a group described by officials as exploiting religion. Another suspect reportedly had a prior record related to narcotics.
Istanbul Governor Davut Gül confirmed the casualties and detentions, adding that no Israeli diplomats have been stationed at the consulate for approximately two and a half years.
The attack occurred around midday, triggering a large-scale deployment of police units to secure the area.
In an official statement, the Interior Ministry referred to the attackers as “terrorists,” stating that the deceased suspect, identified as Yunus E.S., had alleged links to an extremist organization. However, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Officials also said digital communication between the suspects had been uncovered, and questioning of the two wounded detainees remains ongoing as part of the investigation.
