ISFAHAN, Iran (Horn post) A series of powerful explosions were reported near Iran’s Isfahan nuclear facility overnight, with satellite imagery indicating significant blasts and possible fires in the area, according to independent analysis.
Imagery reviewed from the Meteosat-12 weather satellite revealed sudden flashes and atmospheric disturbances over central Iran late at night, suggesting large-scale explosions or sustained fires. The images captured rapid changes in brightness over a wide area, a signal often associated with intense heat events.
According to analysis of sequential satellite frames, distinct bursts were visible between approximately 10:30 p.m. and 10:40 p.m. local time, indicating that they involved multiple explosions or a prolonged blaze lasting at least 10 minutes.
Although the signatures appeared relative in size, experts noted that the underlying fires or blasts would have been significant enough to register from space-based observation systems. The highest-resolution imagery available from Meteosat-12 covers areas of roughly one square kilometer, suggesting the incident affected a concentrated but intense zone.
The BBC’s verification unit, which analyzed the satellite data, said the visual evidence showed clouds hovering over the area before the sudden emergence of bright flashes, consistent with explosive activity.
Iranian authorities have not immediately provided detailed information on the extent of damage or the cause of the explosions. It remains unclear whether the Isfahan nuclear facility itself was directly impacted.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions, raising concerns over the security of critical infrastructure and the potential for further escalation. Observers say additional verification and on-the-ground assessments will be required to determine the full scope
