Somalia Federal Forces Clash with Southwest Troops in Baidoa Amid Reports of Turkish-Linked Support

BAIDOA, Somalia (Horn post) Heavy fighting erupted on the outskirts of Baidoa on Monday as troops from the Federal Government of Somalia clashed with forces loyal to the Southwest State, escalating a deepening political and security crisis in the region.

The clashes, involving both light and heavy weaponry, mark one of the most serious confrontations between Mogadishu and a federal member state in recent years. Local officials and witnesses said the fighting broke out in peri-urban areas surrounding the city, with casualties reported on both sides, though no official toll has been released.

Disputed Role of Turkish Support

Amid the escalation, Southwest State authorities have accused the federal government of relying on Turkish-backed military capabilities in the offensive.

Regional officials and local media reports indicate that Turkish-trained Somali special forces and equipment supplied by Turkey were involved in the advance toward Baidoa.

Separately, reports have also suggested that Turkish support may have included drone surveillance or operational assistance, though these claims remain unverified and have not been confirmed by Somali or Turkish officials.

Analysts note that Somalia has, for years, relied on Ankara for military training, logistics, and equipment, particularly through elite units such as the Gorgor commandos, which have been deployed in frontline operations.

However, there is no confirmed evidence that Turkish troops are directly participating in combat operations in Baidoa.

Frontlines Around the City

Federal forces advancing from Buurhakaba and surrounding regions have attempted to push toward Baidoa, while regional troops say they have repelled initial incursions and secured key positions.

Some reports indicate that government-aligned forces were halted near strategic installations, including the central police station, as fighting intensified.

Inside the city, security has been tightened, with additional checkpoints and patrols deployed amid fears of further escalation.

Political Crisis Driving Conflict

The violence comes against the backdrop of a worsening political standoff between the federal government and the Southwest State administration.

The regional government recently severed ties with Mogadishu following disputes over elections and constitutional reforms, with both sides accusing each other of illegitimacy and interference.

The confrontation has raised concerns among international observers that Somalia could face renewed internal instability if the dispute is not resolved through dialogue.

Risk of Wider Escalation

The situation in Baidoa remains volatile, with fears that continued fighting could trigger:

Wider armed confrontation between federal and regional forces

Increased displacement of civilians

Opportunities for militant groups such as Al-Shabaab to exploit instability

For now, the extent of foreign involvement — particularly allegations of Turkish operational support — remains unclear, but the claims underscore the growing regional and international dimensions of Somalia’s internal conflict.
