Hargeisa Mayor Vows to Step Down at End of Term, Rejects Extension.

Hargeisa (Horn post) The Mayor of the capital of Somaliland Hargeisa city, Abdikarim Ahmed Mooge, has reaffirmed that he will step down at the end of his elected term on May 31, 2026, rejecting any possibility of an extension.

In remarks made during a media interview on Tuesday, Moge said he remains committed to the pledge he made to voters, stressing that he will not seek to prolong his time in office beyond the constitutional mandate.

“I am not someone who changes promises,” he said. “When I complete my term, I will hand over the responsibility entrusted to me with dignity. I oppose term extensions—they are not in Somaliland’s interest and are harmful”

Moge emphasized that extending mandates undermines democratic principles and public trust, noting that he has consistently opposed such measures. He expressed hope that his successor will serve the capital with integrity and dedication.

His statement comes amid broader political debates in Somaliland over term extensions and electoral timelines, with concerns among observers about governance continuity and adherence to democratic norms.

The mayor’s position reinforces calls for timely transitions of power and adherence to electoral commitments in Hargeisa, a move analysts say could strengthen institutional credibility and public confidence.
