Wajid, Somalia (Horn post) — A passenger aircraft came under gunfire while attempting to land at Wajid Airport in Somalia’s Bakool region, in an incident linked to escalating political tensions between the Federal Government of Somalia and the Southwest State administration.
According to eyewitnesses, the aircraft had departed from Hudur and was approaching the runway in Wajid when armed men opened fire from outside the airport perimeter. Several rounds reportedly struck the plane, forcing the pilot to abort the landing.
Witnesses told local media that the gunmen fired multiple shots, hitting parts of the aircraft as it descended. The crew managed to regain control and redirected the flight back to Hudur before continuing onward.
Sources indicate that the aircraft later landed safely in Mogadishu. There were no immediate reports of casualties or injuries.
The incident comes amid a deepening political standoff between Mogadishu and the Southwest State leadership, raising concerns over security and the safety of civilian air travel in the region.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the attack, and it remains unclear who was responsible.
