Uganda’s Museveni Poised for Seventh Term as Opposition Rejects Early Results.
Kampala (Horn post) Uganda’s long-serving President Yoweri Museveni is on course to secure a seventh term in office, according to provisional results released by the country’s Electoral Commission.
With results from 70 percent of polling stations counted, the Electoral Commission said Museveni has secured around 75 percent of the vote, while his main challenger, opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, has obtained approximately 21 percent
Officials said the trend indicates that Museveni is likely to be declared the winner in the coming hours, extending his rule that began in 1986.
However, the opposition has strongly rejected the preliminary figures. Bobi Wine dismissed the results as fraudulent and urged his supporters to disregard them.
“Ignore the fake results,” Bobi Wine said in a statement, adding that “the people of Uganda will have the final say on this nonsense.”
The opposition leader has repeatedly accused the authorities of manipulating the electoral process, citing alleged irregularities, intimidation, and restrictions on opposition activities during the campaign and voting period. The government and electoral authorities have denied the allegations, insisting that the vote is being conducted in accordance with the law.
The announcement of the provisional results comes amid heightened security across the country, particularly in Kampala and other major cities, as tensions remain high following a tightly contested and politically charged election.
Uganda’s Electoral Commission has called for calm, urging all candidates and their supporters to respect the electoral process as vote counting continues.
Museveni’s expected victory would further consolidate his decades-long grip on power, while critics say the election underscores ongoing concerns about political freedoms and democratic competition in the East African nation.
The final official results are expected to be announced once counting from all polling stations is completed.
