Israel’s Foreign Minister Accuses UN Security Council of Double Standards over Somaliland Recognition.

Jerusalem (Horn Post) Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has accused the United Nations Security Council of hypocrisy and double standards following remarks made by his country’s deputy representative to the UN during a recent debate that referenced Somaliland.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the minister said Israel’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations had exposed what he described as the Security Council’s “two-faced approach” when it comes to questions of recognition and legitimacy.

Gideon Sa’ar noted that the debate highlighted inconsistencies in how the international community applies principles of statehood and sovereignty.

The Israeli foreign minister also referenced comments made by Tammy Bruce, the United States’ Deputy Representative to the United Nations, who addressed the issue of Somaliland during the same session. According to the minister, Bruce’s remarks underscored what he termed as the double standards and hypocrisy of both the international community and the UN Security Council in dealing with Somaliland’s case.

“Other countries are allowed to recognize entities that do not meet the criteria of statehood,” the minister said. “Israel, however, is criticized or restricted for recognizing what is clearly a real and functioning state.”

Issuing what he described as a clear warning, the Israeli foreign minister stressed that Israel alone would decide the nature of its diplomatic relationships. “No one will determine for Israel which countries it may or may not establish diplomatic relations with,” he said.

The comments come amid heightened international debate over Somaliland’s quest for recognition, following recent diplomatic developments and growing discussion of the territory’s political status at the United Nations. Somaliland, which restored its independence in 1991, has long argued that it meets all the legal and political criteria for statehood under international law.
