Somaliland Parties Hail Israel’s Diplomatic Recognition as Historic and Lawful.
Hargeisa – (Horn Post) The three national political parties of the Republic of Somaliland—Kulmiye, Waddani, and Kaah—have jointly reaffirmed that Somaliland’s sovereignty, independence, and democratic governance firmly qualify it for full international recognition.
In a joint press statement released on Tuesday, the parties warmly welcomed and endorsed the mutual recognition of statehood between the Republic of Somaliland and the State of Israel. They expressed gratitude to the Israeli government for formally recognizing Somaliland and for establishing diplomatic relations with Hargeisa, describing the move as a principled and historic step consistent with international law.
The statement emphasized that Somaliland’s statehood is rooted in the will of its people, historical facts, and international legal legitimacy. Somaliland attained independence from the United Kingdom on June 26, 1960, and was recognized at the time by 35 countries. It voluntarily united with Italian Somalia on July 1, 1960, a union that later collapsed on January 26, 1991. Somaliland subsequently reasserted its sovereignty on May 18, 1991, in accordance with Article 4(b) of the Constitutive Act of the African Union, which upholds respect for borders inherited at independence.
The three parties underlined that for more than three decades, Somaliland has maintained peace, stability, democratic governance, and the rule of law in a region often marked by conflict. They noted that Somaliland has consistently met the core criteria of internationally recognized statehood, having conducted regular, peaceful, and credible elections, upheld constitutional order, and ensured peaceful transfers of power.
According to the statement, Somaliland has demonstrated that it is a responsible and reliable political entity with which the international community can effectively cooperate. The parties highlighted Somaliland’s sustained collaboration with international partners on security, counterterrorism, and anti-piracy efforts, stressing that the country has played an active and constructive role in promoting regional and global stability.
The parties also called on the people of Somaliland to preserve national unity and cohesion, safeguard peace and security, and remain vigilant against incitement and misinformation. They urged citizens to continue supporting state institutions, particularly security agencies, as they have done over the past 34 years, to protect the country’s hard-won peace and progress.
Reaffirming Somaliland’s foreign policy orientation toward partnership and cooperation with the international community, the three parties appealed to all countries worldwide to follow the commendable example set by Israel by formally recognizing the Republic of Somaliland in accordance with international law.

Signed by Chairmen of the Republic of Somaliland Political parties Kulmiye, Waddani, and Kaah.
