Hargeisa (Horn post) The Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland, Mr. Mohamed Abdirahman Hassan, on Wednesday officially opened the national quarterly coordination meeting on maritime security and maritime development.
The meeting, organized by the Maritime Security Office under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aimed to assess the current maritime security situation, review progress made in the sector, and facilitate the exchange of operational reports and future among key stakeholders.
Speaking at the opening session, the newly appointed Director of the Maritime Security Office, Mr. Mohamed Adan Tukaale, alongside the Deputy Director, Mr. Yahye Mohamed Hanas, reaffirmed their strong commitment to accelerating the office’s work. They emphasized priorities including the modernization of maritime security systems and the strengthening of inter-agency cooperation across relevant institutions.
Representatives from the EU CAP mission, Mr. Bert and Mr. Mahad Ahmed, also addressed the meeting. They expressed appreciation for the ongoing collaboration and reiterated the European Union’s continued commitment to providing technical support to Somaliland in the areas of maritime security and maritime development.
In his keynote remarks, Director General Mohamed Abdirahman Hassan underlined the Ministry’s firm commitment to safeguarding Somaliland’s maritime domain, advancing maritime-related legislation, and enhancing coordination among all maritime stakeholders. He stressed that maritime security is a cornerstone of national economic growth, trade facilitation, and overall security.
Throughout the session, participants were presented with key reports and technical presentations. Contributions were made by a wide range of stakeholders, including line ministries, the Office of the Attorney General, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Police Force, and universities offering maritime and marine sciences.
The meeting concluded with a collective resolution to further strengthen stakeholder coordination, jointly support the implementation of maritime security legislation, and institutionalize regular coordination forums. Participants agreed that sustained dialogue and collaboration, led by the Maritime Security Coordination Office within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are essential to enhancing maritime security and development in the Republic of Somaliland.
