Crisis Group: U.S. Under Trump Administration Showing Strong Inclination Toward Somaliland Recognition

Hargeisa – (Hornpost) – The International Crisis Group has released a new report suggesting that former U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration appear increasingly inclined toward closer engagement with Somaliland — a move that could potentially lead to formal recognition of the self-declared Republic.

According to the report, Washington has shown readiness to strengthen its diplomatic and strategic relations with Somaliland, marking a significant shift in U.S. policy in the Horn of Africa.

The report also highlights growing concern within Somalia’s leadership over the possibility that the United States might formally recognize Somaliland, which has maintained de facto independence from Somalia for the past 34 years.

Crisis Group notes that Somaliland’s new administration has established strong and consistent ties with U.S. officials, a development that has further unsettled Mogadishu.

The report adds that Washington has become increasingly frustrated with Somalia’s prolonged state-building challenges and fragile governance, despite decades of international support in the form of financial, political, and military assistance. The U.S. is said to be disappointed by the lack of tangible progress in rebuilding Somalia’s state institutions and ensuring national stability.
