Hargeisa (Horn post) Somaliland marked a historic moment today as it received its first international recognition after 34 years of persistent diplomatic efforts.
The milestone, hailed as a major achievement for the people of Somaliland, was met with celebrations across the region and widespread expressions of hope for a new chapter of development and international engagement.
Leaders of Somaliland’s three main political parties — Kulmiye, Waddani, and Kaah — jointly congratulated the people of Somaliland and extended formal thanks to the government of Israel following the historic recognition.
Mohamed Kahin Ahmed, Chairman of the ruling Kulmiye Party, delivered a heartfelt speech, thanking the Israeli government for acknowledging Somaliland’s sovereignty. He emphasized that recognition opens the door for Somaliland to join the global community and pursue new development opportunities. “This recognition represents both confidence and support for the people of Somaliland,” Mohamed Kahin Ahmed said.
Hersi Ali Hassan, Chairman of the opposition Waddani Party, welcomed the recognition, noting that today’s achievement reflects the dedication and unity of Somaliland’s people and leaders in pursuing long-sought international acknowledgment. “The efforts of our citizens and political leadership have culminated in this historic milestone, demonstrating our commitment to a sovereign and recognized nation,” Hirsi Ali Hassan said.
Mahmoud Hashi Abdi, Chairman of the Kaah Party, described the recognition as a symbol of the long-standing struggle of the people of Somaliland. He thanked the government of Israel and highlighted the potential for establishing full bilateral relations and cooperation. “This is not only a recognition of our independence but the beginning of constructive partnerships for the future,” Mohamoud Abdi said.
The three-party leaders stressed that Israel’s recognition signals broader political shifts both regionally and internationally. It presents opportunities for foreign investment, international cooperation, and enhanced diplomatic engagement, which could accelerate Somaliland’s development and integration into the global community.
As celebrations continue, leaders emphasized that sustaining support from the international community is critical to transforming recognition into tangible progress. Today, Somaliland not only celebrates a historic diplomatic achievement but also embarks on a new chapter aimed at fostering socio-economic growth, strengthening governance, and enduring international ties.
