Former Somaliland Presidents Send Peace Message from UAE Amidst Borama Unrest

Dubai – (Hornpost) In a significant joint statement from the United Arab Emirates, former Presidents of the Republic of Somaliland, Dahir Rayale Kahin and Muse Bihi Abdi, have called for calm and reconciliation in the wake of recent unrest in the city of Borama.

Their message comes as tensions rise following the controversial introduction of a document related to the Ciise Code, which has sparked protests and unrest in the Awdal region of Somaliland.

The leaders emphasized the need for dialogue, urging the citizens of Borama, the Somaliland government, and the broader public to listen to the wise counsel of local elders. “Let us de-escalate the situation in Borama and heed the peaceful calls from the community’s leaders,” they stated in their message.

Supporting the government’s recent decision to halt the implementation of the Xeer Ciise, the former presidents highlighted the importance of resolving issues through peaceful means. Considering the protests that led to tragic losses of life, both leaders expressed their condolences to the families affected by the tragic events in Borama.

President Muse Bihi, the sixth president of Somaliland, addressed the people of Borama, stating, “We are not here to discuss laws or festivities; a greater calamity has befallen us, and it is this calamity that needs resolution.” His poignant remarks underscore the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that the focus should remain on restoring peace and stability rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric.

In a separate message targeted towards the youth of Awdal, former President Dahir Rayale called for an end to violence and encouraged young people to engage with their elders. “I urge the youth of Awdal to refrain from violence and to listen to your elders,” he said, recognizing the pivotal role that the younger generation plays in shaping the future of the region.

The recent disturbances in Borama erupted after the government announced the release of a document pertaining to the Xeer Ciise, which is an important cultural and legal framework within the community.

However, the decision was met with significant backlash, prompting protests that led to fatalities, drawing national attention to the issue.

The government, recognizing the fragile situation, has since announced the suspension of the Xeer Ciise initiative. This decision aims to pacify the situation and encourage further dialogue between stakeholders.

As the people of Borama navigate these challenging times, calls for peace and unity resonate more than ever.

The sentiments expressed by President Bihi and former President Rayale reflect a broader desire for tranquility and cooperation among the diverse communities within Somaliland.

In conclusion, the message from the two former leaders serves as a reminder of the importance of dialogue and understanding in times of crisis.

As Somaliland faces these challenges, the hope for a peaceful resolution lies in the hands of its citizens, guided by the wisdom of their leaders and elders. The ongoing situation in Borama will undoubtedly shape the future of the region, and it remains crucial for all parties involved to prioritize peace and stability to foster a harmonious society.
