Mogadishu (Hornpost) — Former President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, has expressed deep concern over the worsening drought and humanitarian crisis affecting millions across the country.
In a press statement issued in Mogadishu, Farmajo said that more than five million Somalis are currently facing severe food insecurity, with many receiving little to no emergency assistance. He noted that the situation has been deteriorating over the past two years, driven by persistent drought, rising prices, and the sharp decline in humanitarian aid.
“The humanitarian emergency caused by the ongoing drought has directly affected nearly five million people who have not received adequate relief corresponding to the critical conditions they are experiencing,” the statement read.
Farmajo called on Somali religious leaders, business communities, and the wider public to urgently mobilize support to rescue vulnerable families, emphasizing that global humanitarian assistance has dropped significantly and now covers less than 25% of those in need.
He also urged the Somali diaspora, as well as leaders at both federal and state levels, to unite in responding to this escalating crisis.
Farmaajo appealed to the international community to accelerate the delivery of emergency aid to thousands of struggling households.
In concluding his statement, the former president prayed for relief and rainfall for the Somali people, asking God to ease the nation’s hardships.
