G20 Leaders Gather in South Africa where the annual summit is set to officially to open as U.S. Skips Rotational Chair Role

Johannesburg (Hornpost) — Leaders of the G20 are convening in Johannesburg, South Africa, where the annual summit is set to officially open this week. The meeting brings together heads of state and government from the world’s major economies to discuss global economic stability, development priorities, and emerging geopolitical challenges.

However, the United States — which had been expected to assume the rotating presidency for this cycle — is notably absent from the summit’s leadership role. Washington’s non-participation in the rotational chairmanship has drawn attention among member states, though U.S. officials have not provided detailed public comments on the decision.

South Africa, the host nation, has emphasized the significance of this year’s summit, noting that it arrives at a time when global cooperation is needed to address economic uncertainty, climate pressures, and ongoing regional conflicts.

The Johannesburg meeting is expected to focus on trade, energy security, digital reforms, and strengthening partnerships between major economies and developing nations.
