Qatar Reportedly Reassessing Policy Toward Somaliland After President Cirro’s Visit

London (Hornpost)– Reports emerging today suggest that the State of Qatar is reviewing its long-standing policy toward Somaliland following the recent visit of President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Cirro.

Diplomatic sources indicate that Qatari officials are considering new avenues of engagement with Hargeisa, marking a potential departure from Doha’s traditional alignment with the Federal Government of Somalia in Mogadishu.

A Nairobi-based regional analyst told Media that “Qatar has traditionally supported Somalia’s federal government, but President Cirro’s outreach seems to have opened a new chapter. If Doha moves closer to Hargeisa, it will alter the diplomatic dynamics of the Horn of Africa.”

Officials in Hargeisa have welcomed the reports, describing the possible shift as a “positive sign.” A senior Somaliland diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “Somaliland seeks constructive relations with all Gulf states. Any shift in Qatar’s policy will be seen as recognition of our growing role in regional stability.”

Analysts highlight that such a development could carry major implications for Somaliland’s push for broader international recognition, while also reshaping its strategic partnerships in the Red Sea and Horn of Africa Country.
