Washington (Hornpost.com) A passenger plane carrying 64 passengers and crew crashed into the Potomac River in Washington DC, after a US military helicopter collided in the air.

At least 19 bodies have been recovered from the river so far, according to sources. Individuals from the United States and Russia are among those known to have been on the plane when the accident happened.

Rescue teams are spending a lot of time searching the river for the missing people.

Ronald Reagan Airport near Washington has been temporarily closed while authorities investigate what happened.

Around 21:00 local time on Wednesday, PSA Airlines’ American Airlines 5342 crashed into a US Army helicopter as it approached Ronald Reagan Washington Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. (FAA).

Reports say that the passenger plane turned two white as several of its tires fell into the river, while the helicopter crashed into the surface of the water.

The Bombardier CRJ700 plane took off from Wichita, Kansas, and had 60 passengers and four crew members on board, according to American Airlines.

The Pentagon said the helicopter involved in the crash was a Sikorsky H-60 that took off from Fort Belvoir in Virginia.

Three American soldiers were with him, Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said. Another officer said it was on a training flight and belonged to B Company, 12th Airlift Wing from Fort Belvoir in Virginia.
